Who?
Smiling Geek Enterprises is a sole proprietorship offering computer consulting and general problem solving.
The principal consultant is Marc Donovan, but there is a small support team in the background that helps solve specialized issues.
When?
Marc started solving problems in 1982 for the University of Calgary. Since then, he has consulted and solved problems for a wide variety of companies around the world, including:

What?
The main speciality is high availability and disaster recovery consulting. It is possible to make it so that your data is always available to you, no matter what disasters happen to your office, building, town or region. Most comprehensive solutions are not cheap, but you’ll be surprised at what is possible with a modest budget.
Marc also has experience with computer systems administration, computer infrastructure planning, remote management, ISO 900x certification, security planning, network support, and programming in a variety of languages. He has worked with Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Sun Solaris and SunOS, HPUX, various flavours of Linux, and a few other operating systems. Let’s also mention non-computer experience with items as diverse as primitive and medieval technology, modern renovation techniques, and stained glass design and construction.
In addition to his hands-on, real world experience, Marc has the following formal education degrees:
- BSc in Archaeology from University of Calgary (included extensive course work in Engineering and Computer Science)
- Post-Graduate Certificate in Software Engineering from University of Oxford.
- BSc Computing Science from Vancouver Island University

Today, Marc is based in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. With easy access to several major airports, he can be just about anywhere you need him to be.
